White Rock: $15,000 arts study rejected

White Rock council has rejected a recommendation to allocate $15,000 for a feasibility study for a dedicated arts centre in the city.

The suggested study – part of a report from leisure services director Rita Clarkson – is “premature,” according to Couns. Lynne Sinclair and Helen Fathers.

But both say they believe a dedicated arts centre is clearly a good idea as part of overall planning to revitalize the city.

“I don’t think we need to spend $15,000 to have the answer for that,” Sinclair said after Monday’s council meeting.

The report, a followup to November’s Conversation on the Arts sponsored by the city’s cultural committee, provided estimates of capital costs for a new arts centre at $10-$17 million.

“That’s ludicrous – we don’t have the funds for that,” Fathers told Peace Arch News.

“That (suggestion) didn’t come from the cultural committee.”
