Victoria: Community Arts Council in peril
Victoria’s Community Arts Council has been the basis of grassroots support for art in this city for 40 years. Look 2010, the annual show for all comers, is on at the Bay Centre (bottom floor near escalator) daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., until March 20, with almost 500 entries on show.
Due to drastic cuts to the arts by the provincial government, the council’s existence is threatened. Its gallery (G6-1001 Douglas St., 250-381-2787) presents new shows almost every week, providing opportunities for entry-level artists and community groups unmatched in the city. We must find a way to give this group our ongoing support.
