Vancouver: The jazz festival brings us together in a shared experience

Celebrating its silver anniversary this year, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival is not even half the age of the venerable Monterey and Newport jazz festivals, but it has gained such prestige in the past 25 years that it stands with them as the best in the world.

When it began as part of Expo 86, few knew the festival would become the musical and cultural juggernaut it is today. Perhaps it would have remained a small regional festival if not for a remarkable confrontation at its inaugural event between two famous trumpet players, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis.
