Vancouver: Mile Long Jam To Take Over Main Street this Sat

The inaugural Mile Long Jam happens this Saturday. This kind of organic self-organized street festival is inspired by regular events that happen in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park. The Mile Long Jam aims to bring live music to Main Street all the way from Science World to King Edward Ave. Musicians and performers will be playing in front of some of Main Street’s most popular cafes, restaurants and cafes.

Maybe the best part about this event is that it’s actually not sanctioned by the city. While this may lead to some challenges (performers are technically required to have a permit licence to play on city streets) that’s sort of the whole point of the event: it might be best to think of it as a citizen initiated version of the city’s official Car Free Vancouver events – except there’ll still be cars. I love that this is a community festival that’s literally organized from the bottom up, instead of waiting for the city to do it for us.
