Vancouver curator to take part in Sydney Biennale: Tania Willard is one of six curators to participate in Canada Council initiative to expand skills and raise profile of first nations artists

Vancouver curator Tania Willard is one of a group of Canadian aboriginal curators being sent by the Canada Council to take part in the 17th Sydney Biennale.

Before Willard arrives in Australia for the opening on May 12, she’ll be going to New Zealand to visit several of that country’s major art galleries and Maori art centres.

“The purpose is to give indigenous artists and curators from here a chance to experience the international art scene,” Willard said.

It will also give her a chance to see how big international art exhibitions are staged and which artists are being shown. She expects to see the work of new aboriginal artists from Australia at the exhibit.

One of her areas of interest is first nations hip hop, so she’ll be exploring what’s happening with aboriginal hip-hop artists with the idea of possibly curating an exhibition in Canada in future.
