Vancouver: BC Buds festival grows beyond Firehall: Free performances in music, dance and theatre sprout up in unlikely venues

Several years ago, Donna Spencer was in an ideas session for a new spring performing-arts festival. Since the festival was supposed to encourage new groups and performances on the May long weekend, everyone was talking about new growth, seeds sprouting and other spring metaphors.

When it came time to name the festival, Spencer came up with BC Buds. The reference to the illicit kind of bud for which B.C. is famous wasn’t lost on Spencer.

“I thought people would have a good laugh at that — and they do!” Spencer said.

These days, six years on, the laughter at BC Buds at the Firehall Arts Centre comes mainly from the performances on stage in the theatre and the more unusual venues throughout the Firehall Arts Centre — in the basement, hallways and even in a bathroom.

This year, the three-day festival is expanding beyond the confines of The Firehall to nearby venues. Performances and readings are also taking place at the Vancouver Police Museum, St. James Anglican Church and Ironworks.
