Vancouver: About those new art galleries with Michael Audain’s name …

Soft-spoken philanthropist with a love of northwest coast art has no reservations about donating to support it

The new Audain Gallery was unveiled recently at the University of B.C.’s Museum of Anthropology.

Just over a week later, Simon Fraser University will open its Audain Gallery today in the SFU Woodward’s complex downtown.

Both are named after Michael Audain, the prominent developer (Polygon), art collector and philanthropist.

Audain’s generosity to the arts is renowned; through the Audain Foundation he’s donated more than $24 million in recent years, including $8 million to the Vancouver Art Gallery, $4.873 million to the University of B.C. and its galleries (the Museum of Anthropology and the Belkin Gallery), and $2.15 million to Simon Fraser’s School for the Contemporary Arts.

However, he prefers to stay out of the limelight. He didn’t attend the opening of the Audain Gallery at the Museum of Anthropology, and as of last week had yet to even see SFU’s Audain Gallery.
