Twenty reasons to back arts alliance
Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts? That Gabrielle Roy quote is on every $20 bill. It’s small, but it’s there — on the same side as the drawing of the Bill Reid sculpture that graces the Vancouver airport terminal. Sounds like “art” is important to this country, doesn’t it? I mean, it says so, right on our money.
Certainly all the visitors to the Winter Olympics enjoyed the Cultural Olympiad as well. We did show off — not just the big stars of Canada but also the talent-laden Metro Vancouver area. Yes, indeedy, we did ourselves proud. It doesn’t seem that our provincial government is quite as proud of us as we are of ourselves. Or something like that.
Anyway, the new budget doesn’t seem to be favorable, according to the Alliance for Arts. Gaming funds for arts and cultural allocations, as well as funding for BC Arts Council grants, are significantly lower than in 2008/09. That’s what they said. I’m not a numbers person, and definitely not an accounting expert. But I believe in the Alliance. Contact Kevin Dale McKeown, director of communications at the Alliance, for the real lowdown. If your arts group was affected by the gaming-fund cuts, you may want to get on board with the Alliance and see if we can’t get a better allocation. Phone Kevin at 604-681-3535 or email him at communications@allianceforarts.com.
