The University of Victoria adds to its fine art collection with new spaces
It’s the largest art gallery in Victoria, with more than 27,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and more, displayed in dozens of buildings.
Most people don’t think of the University of Victoria that way.
Yet for decades, its halls of learning have also been filled with precious art. In the last two years alone, 50 major works have been installed in five new buildings with specially designed exhibition spaces.
“This collection is important for the history of art in Victoria and B.C. and Canada,” said Carole Sabiston, whose murals and aerial sculptures have been seen in shows across Canada and Europe, and hang in corporate office as well as in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que., just across the river from Ottawa.
The UVic collection not only covers a vast array of objects and centuries, Sabiston said, “but adds enormous vitality and visual atmosphere” to the campus.
