The lowdown on the Vancouver International Jazz Festival
The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 25 to July 4) celebrates its silver anniversary this year and, aside from a bigger budget and more venues, in temperament it hasn’t changed a lot from its inaugural year in 1986.
It still offers a smorgasbord of music for all tastes: established, big-name acts (George Benson, Chick Corea) and up-and-comers (Nikki Yanofsky, Raul Midon); mainstream artists (pianists Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes) and avant-garde musicians (Schlippenbach Trio, Eric Boeren 4tet); players from far afield (Australia’s Clocked Out Duo) and from our own backyard (scores of Vancouver groups); electric fusion (Mike Stern), hip hop (Buck 65), world music (Swami), old-school R&B (Ola Onabule), even folk (Geoff Muldaur and Jim Kweskin).
