Surrey: ‘On the MOVE’ free workshop part of festival

Valuable info for dancers who want to go pro can be had at a free workshop held during the Surrey Festival of Dance.

The “On the MOVE” workshop on April 3 is a day-long session of “professional development and personal growth” aimed at dancers age 16 and over, parents and dance teachers.

An organizer of the event is Andrea Gunnlaugson, a North Delta resident who danced for three decades before a wonky knee forced her to retire from dancing professionally.

“The workshop has so much valuable information — stuff I wished I’d learned when I first started out,” she said. “It’s geared toward the emerging generation of dancers to help them cope with what’s coming at them, all those things people like me dealt with and overcame.”

Gunnlaugson works with the B.C. branch of Dancer Transition Resource Centre, which assists youngsters get into the professional ranks as much as help dancers retire effectively. She is also a massage practitioner and doula.
