Strings attached to arts funding in B.C.: Most of $10 million in legacy money must go to youth programs: Krueger

Arts groups, still reeling from deep cuts to their funding, should expect $10 million in government legacy money this year to be mostly earmarked for youth programs, says the B.C. arts minister.

“We do want an emphasis for a substantial portion of it on mentoring young artists and helping them get their start in their careers,” Kevin Krueger, minister of tourism, culture and the arts, said yesterday.

Krueger’s remarks, made shortly after he proclaimed it arts and culture week in B.C., are the latest indication that a $30-million pot of Olympic legacy funds for arts groups over the next three years will come with a set of government restrictions.

Details are expected by the end of April, Krueger’s office said.

The legacy money, first mentioned in the March provincial budget, was supposed to help make up for at least some of the deep cuts to other sources of arts funding.
