Skyscrapers and Streetscapes: Why Art Funding Murder Kills More Than Just the Artist
There are many ways to help the less fortunate. Clothing drives, canned food, a friendly smile, or just a simple conversation when there’s something to talk about. Personally, I don’t have much to give away — but I can hold a conversation, and I can write stories. I play to my strengths. Sharon Kallis is an artist playing to her strengths. She has been making art and actively participating with the less fortunate residents of the Downtown Eastside (DTES) since the mid 90′s.
Sharon has worked with a number of local organizations to help grow the DTES community into something more than it is now. And not by building new condos, or moving the bums, hobos and addicts along to the next ghetto. What she does is actively engage with all members of this community in an effort to improve their livelihood, simply by teaching them ways to make art sustainably. Her work with the DTES Centre for the Arts, local Women’s Shelters, and Enterprising Women Making Art (EWMA) have all directly had a positive effect on people living in the DTES.
