Rejuvenated Ballet keeps Molnar on her toes: Company’s new artistic director talks Solid Gold, Wham, Spandau Ballet
To borrow a line from fleet-footed rapper LL Cool J, don’t call it a comeback. The return of Ballet B.C. is more like a rejuvenation–part microdermabrasion, part hot stone massage–says Emily Molnar.
Ballet B.C.’s interim artistic director since July, Molnar helped steer the cash-strapped company through a particularly precarious transition period filled with budget concerns, cuts to arts funding and the departure of John Alleyne, who spent 16 years at the helm.
For her efforts, Molnar was named permanent artistic director of Ballet B.C. last month. Fittingly, the new season opens with RE/Naissance (April 15 to 17 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre) and features three Vancouver premiers, including William Forsythe’s Herman Schmerman, Things I Told Nobody by Israeli-born Itzik Galilil and Short works: 24 by innovative local choreographer Crystal Pite.
