Parksville: Buddy, can you spare $11,964
The Oceanside Community Arts Council has suffered a significant blow to its core funding.
On February 9 the Parksville arts facility was informed by the BC Arts Council that its principle operating grant for 2010 would be just $36, well below the requested amount of $12,000.
The announcement follows on the heels of an earlier denial of direct access gaming money from the provincial government. Last year they received $8,500 derived from lottery and casino revenues and it has been a principle source of operating funds for the arts council.
Lauren Sabine, OCAC’s executive director, said the drastic cuts mean real jeopardy for the continuation of the council’s programming.
“Losing out on both grants amounts to more than $20,000 in core funding,” she said. “What’s more, the grant money helped us develop other sources of revenue like our retail shop, gallery and arts programs. We have already cut staff and have cut our hours of operations so we may now be facing a more serious reality.
