Ottawa honours West Vancouver arts dynamos, Yulanda and Mohammed Faris

When Yulanda and Mohammed Faris receive the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Volunteerism in the Performing Arts this afternoon in Ottawa, it will be tough to choose which branch of the creative tree of life is most indebted to these much-loved champions of the arts and artists. Dance or opera, literary arts or visual arts, the Faris brand of philanthropy means much more than merely handing over money; since their arrival from Lebanon in 1974, the couple has worked tirelessly to help others.

They met at McGill University in Montreal. She came from Jamaica and he came from a pioneering Lebanese family that had settled in Manitoba — opening the first department store in Brandon. After Yulanda and Moh had lived in Lebanon, they looked across Canada for a place to settle
