New Westminster: Arts advocates upset no gallery planned for new civic facility
Members of the city’s arts community are upset after learning the new multi-use civic facility will not have a dedicated, separate space for artists to show their work.
Many were surprised at last week’s open house to hear the news, as there was a widespread belief the new facility—to be built by 2013 on Columbia Street between Eighth and Begbie streets—would include a public art gallery.
“This new facility is supposed to be a destination point and as such there should be space for people to see and buy a true and unique memento of New West,” said Paul Thompson, a director with the Arts Council of New Westminster.
“There is no place for us as artists in this city to focus an exhibit of what we do.”
