New Westminster: Art gallery space possible. But at what price?
The arts community could get the fine art display gallery in New Westminster’s future multi-use civic facility that it’s been calling for.
But that space could come at the expense of other artists.
Planning for the $35-million Downtown facility is well underway, which means room for a permanent gallery is limited.
At Monday’s city council meeting, New Westminster staff suggested one option would be locating the gallery in an 11,000-square-foot portion of the project currently designated as an arts multi-use area.
That could result in other groups—such as potters, arts classes and digital artists—not having their own space.
