New poet laureate named in New West

When she was a 13-year-old, New Westminster resident Candice James fancied herself a poet.

And in 1979, one year into her 30s, James became a published one when a collection of her verses A Split in the Water put her alongside her heroes T.S. Eliot and Leonard Cohen on the bookshelves.

Now, two years into her 60s, James is the Royal City’s newest poet laureate. She was appointed to the role June 14 after a sub-committee of the city’s arts commission voted unanimously in her favour.
