Mixed bag of Jessies awarded to frogs, toads and Woolfs

It didn’t happen in the large-theatre or small-theatre categories, but there was indeed a sweep on Monday at the 28th annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards. Carousel Theatre’s recent presentation of A Year With Frog & Toad hopped on stage at the Commodore Ballroom to receive all four Jessies in the category of theatre for young audiences: best production, best design (Heidi Wilkinson, for this and two other Carousel productions), best artistic creation (to Gordon Roberts for his musical direction) and best performance — by everyone, including Todd Talbot, Allan Zinyk, Darren Burkett, Janet Gigliotti and Kaylee Harwood.

In the adult categories, however, results were all over the map. The only show to garner more than a single acting award was Blackbird Theatre’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which saw small-theatre nods to both Meg Roe as best supporting actress and Craig Erickson as best supporting actor. Small theatre’s top honours for acting went to Anthony F. Ingram, best actor for Shameless Hussy’s production of Frozen, and Laara Sadiq, best actress for a co-production of Palace of the End.
