With BC’s Spirit Festival kicking off in a few short weeks, Parks Canada’s 100th anniversary and the City of Vancouver’s 125th birthday, 2011 not only marks one year since we welcomed the world to the Winter Olympics but also commemorates the 10th annual BC Cultural Crawl.

Presented by the Assembly of BC Arts Councils and Van Dopp and Associates, the BC Cultural Crawl was launched as a modest BC Day celebration ten years ago. Today, it has grown into a cornerstone provincial event spanning the entire month of August.

The 2011 Crawl already promises to include more events and communities than ever before. It’s time to start thinking about how you’ll participate. Perhaps you’ll plan a small outdoor arts festival in your town, host an intimate concert in your living room, or take a trip to the north of the province like you’ve always meant to. Perhaps your arts organization will take the lead in your city and organize a weekend-long cultural crawl, or you’ll pack up your family and brave the journey to breathtaking shores of Haida Gwaii.

However you plan to explore British Columbia this summer, the BC Cultural Crawl team is here to guide you along the way. By logging on to bcculturalcrawl.com you’ll have access to our Cultural Crawl Toolkit, a day-by-day list of festivals and events, and a comprehensive list of all participating BC communities. You will also find suggested community cultural crawls, studio tours and itineraries for week-long adventures and featured afternoon escapes.

If you are interested in organizing a Cultural Crawl in your community, click here.

January 31, 2011

For immediate release

Vancouver, BC – Actsafe today announced the implementation of the “Live Performance Electrical Certificate (LPEC)’. The LPEC will cover electrical work performed during the setup, run and strike of live events, to cable and maintain a lighting rig or set up audio visual or public address systems for live events and performances.

In British Columbia, the BC Safety Standards Act Electrical Safety Regulations requires workers who handle electrical or audio visual equipment to hold a valid electrical ticket. The Full Entertainment (FE) or Limited Entertainment (LE) certifications were developed to meet the needs of the entertainment industries. However the requirements and level of expertise required to obtain an FE or LE are above the average needs for live performance venues.

“Electrical technicians working in the performing arts identified the certification gap, and raised concerns that venues were out of compliance and crew members were at risk in terms of safety and liability,” said Actsafe General Manager Dawn Brennan. “As a result, Actsafe worked with the industry to develop the new Live Performance Electrical Certificate (LPEC).”

Technically, it is work that requires interconnecting plug and cap assemblies and branch circuits. The LPEC does not apply to the motion picture or television industries, whose workers require an LE or FE. The LPEC is required for electrical work performed in trade shows, conventions, touring shows and festivals in addition to theatres, concert halls and other performing arts venues.

The LPEC test was written by technicians working in the industry. The LPEC program includes an online study guide, with sample questions. The study guide is now available online.

“I believe that the more workers on a site that have taken the time to become LPEC certified, the safer that site will be and the better our industry will become. Kudos to Actsafe and also to the employers, proactively embracing the LPEC program,” said Billy Peacock, Director, Viridian Power.

“The Live Performance Electrical Certificate fills a much needed gap in the industry. There are many skilled workers performing tasks that are not to the level of a Full Entertainment Electrical Ticket. This gap was identified within the industry and the LPEC provides much needed certification,” added Nik von Schulmann, Director of Production, Patrick Roberge Productions.

The Performing arts venues and contractors should be aware that unless their electrical and audio video technicians currently hold an FE or an LE, they are out of compliance with provincial electrical regulations and should make every effort to come into compliance.

B.C. Spirit Festivals will kick off around the province this month celebrating the first anniversary of the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, and locally that will come in the form of the Mail Art Olympix.

The McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville was given a $16,000 grant from the province to put on the event. Other art centres around the province were also given funding to hold commemorative festivals.

The Mail Art Olympix debuted in Courtenay in 2009 and has travelled around the province, including a show in Vancouver during the Olympics. The grant will allow for an expanded catalogue in Parksville showing the 860 pieces of artwork from the 340 artists located in 41 countries, and a website including a scanned copy of each piece.

The Mail Art Network has been flourishing around the world since the 1960s, said curator and organizer of the exhibition Ed Varney, and continues to thrive today. The network involves people from all over the world exchanging art work through the postal system. It began as an early form of social networking, a fun way to meet other artists, but for others it was much more serious.

Vancouver, B.C. – (January 26, 2011) – Public Dreams Society, a not-for-profit dedicated to bringing interactive and accessible public art to life in Vancouver, has been awarded a $50,000 brand makeover to further its vision of bringing communities together in a shared creative experience.

The generous donation is part of an annual charity initiative, Karo Kaus, run by branding agency, Karo Group. To date, Karo has awarded $400,000 of brand strategy and multidisciplinary creative services to deserving charities in Vancouver and Calgary, each charity receiving a $50,000 brand makeover.

“Public Dreams Society really stood out as it has been an integral part of the Vancouver cultural scene since 1985 and has awed and inspired tens of thousands of people with its spirited public art,” says Anne Farrer, vice president and managing director of Karo Group Vancouver. “Karo Kaus is about making a difference in local communities. We want to help Public Dreams reach its full potential and touch many more Vancouverites through art in the years to come.”

“We are thrilled to win this brand makeover,” says Laura Grieco, managing director of Public Dreams Society. “People donʼt always realize that Public Dreams is behind some of Vancouverʼs largest interactive arts events like Illuminares Lantern Procession, which attracts up to 25,000 artists and attendees, Parade of Lost Souls and the upcoming LunarFest. Itʼs wonderful to have Karo onboard to help us raise our public profile and create more opportunities for our talented community.”

Public Dreams Society is the fourth recipient of Vancouver Karo Kaus. Past winners include Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) where Karo was able to help them and boost ticket revenue by an unprecedented 40 per cent in 2010 and secure their first-ever season sponsor for 2011.

“I believe wholeheartedly that the re-branding we received from Karo played a major part in our success,” says James Cronk, managing producer for TUTS. “Our new brand has raised our organization to a new level and continues to be commented on by our patrons, sponsors and volunteers.”

For more information about Public Dreams, visit www.publicdreams.org.
