Contest pairs producers with scientists: Gen Screen BC gives filmmakers chance to make plots more accurate

A new initiative, which kicks off tonight, will not only give at least three filmmakers money in their pockets, it will go a long way to make their films more accurate when it comes to scientific details.

Gen Screen BC, organized by Genome BC and the BC Clinical Genomic Network, is a film competition that pairs producers of short videos (three to 10 minutes long) with members of the scientific community.

Filmmakers making videos about genetics can now find a scientist to act as an adviser to vet scripts and film sets to ensure that scientific details – not usually a strong suit for artists — are accurate.

It is expected that directors will work with the scientists during the spring and summer.

When the competition closes July 31, the winning films will be chosen, with prizes of $3,500 for first place, $2,000 for second, $1,000 for third and $1,000 for the people’s choice.

The latter award will be voted on by anyone who views the videos on www.scivee.tv.
