The Canadian New Media Awards have chosen two projects by the National Film Board as the year’s best online series and best community campaign.

The winner of the best online series was a massive online film project that examined the effect of the economic downturn by telling the stories of dozens of individual Canadians from across the country.

GDP — Measuring the human side of the Canadian economic crisis, a bilingual site that involved a team of filmmakers under the direction of documentarian Hélène Choquette, has 185 films and photo essays created over the year from September 2009 to September 2010.

Individuals speak about losing a job, trying to start a new business and surviving financially in that period.

The NFB’s Test Tube with David Suzuki won community campaign of the year for its use of multiple social media to get people thinking about human impact on the world.

A new magazine is putting a fresh face on aboriginal life and culture.

Face magazine’s premiere issue rolled off the presses in August and is the first high- gloss publication dealing with First Nations issues, art and culture to reach out to a national readership. The magazine has yet to find a national distributor, but the founder is hopeful its reach could extend beyond Canada’s borders.

“There’s a lot of interest in Washington state right now,” said Randy Fred, publisher. “There are a lot of really, really fine artists down there.”

Face takes a strong focus on arts and culture – music, poetry, fiction, stories from elders, humour and food – but doesn’t flinch from prickly topics or reviewing controversial material such as the book Disrobing the Aboriginal Industry: the Deception Behind Indigenous Cultural Preservation. The book discusses the industry that formed around the levels of bureaucracy created to manage aboriginal affairs, the people whose jobs depend on perpetuating it and the countless millions of dollars it soaks up annually.

Nelson’s newest radio station is promising to be “live, local, and community focused” while regularly including local artists in its music rotation.

Friday noon saw the official launch of 103.5 The Bridge, formerly Mountain FM, at a newly renovated studio at 318 Hall Street. While Mountain FM was a classic rock station, The Bridge’s format will be adult album alternative and indie rock, according to program director Drex Wilcomes.

“You will hear artists like John Mayer, Bob Marley, Sarah McLachlan, and Feist along with local artists like Cheryl Hodge, Wassabi Collective and Ty West,” he says.

“We really want the music to speak for itself. Every song has been chosen for a reason, and we have a massive library.”

He says the station has a “very low key, grassroots attitude… It’s an open door radio station. We want you to come down, talk to the team, give us feedback and bring us unique music. We have a mandate to be on top of everything in Nelson, but we need help to make it happen.”

You can excuse Tracy Stefanucci for the difficulty she experienced in trying to encapsulate a wide-reaching mission statement in one word.

The Port Moody native was in that boat four years ago when launching the first incarnation of her arts and culture magazine, which ended up being called one cool word magazine. Fast forward four years and the name has changed, albeit slightly, to OCW Magazine.

“I really wanted to have a name when we started. We just needed to think of one cool word — all good magazine titles have one cool word,” she said. “It grew to become the perfect title, and it stuck. There’s a lot of spirit and cheekiness as well in it, so it works for us.”

Four years after OCW’s first edition, Stefanucci will trumpet the magazine’s re-launch on Friday, July 23 at Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre. The events kick off at 7:30 p.m., and will be filled out with live music, improv comedy and just about anything else that falls under the magazine’s mantra of, “Don’t just receive culture — participate in creating it.”
