Castlegar: SculptureWalk to feature Vogelaar
Local sculptor Peter Vogelaar, who specializes in snow and sand sculpting, will be participating as an artist in Castlegar’s SculptureWalk.
He is using techniques and skills he employs when sculpting sand and snow to build a special sculpture for Castlegar.
“I’ve done a bit of concrete sculpting as well, and the techniques that we use for sand are quite similar to working with concrete and mortar,” said Vogelaar.
“So I was going to do what’s called ferrocement. Basically it’s a layer of concrete and sand over a steel armature,” he explained. “So it would be a hollow piece and I just build it up in layers like you would with stucco on a house. As I get to the final layer, I try to work very quickly, which is actually something we do with sand all the time anyway.”
