BARD ON THE BEACH APPLAUDS RBC FOUNDATION

Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival is pleased to announce that the RBC Foundation has made a donation of $18,000 in support of Bard on the Beach’s education programming. The cheque was presented to Bard Artistic Director, Christopher Gaze, at the 3rd annual Bill’s Birthday Breakfast fundraiser which this year garnered $10,000 for the Bard Endowment Fund.

Bard in the Classroom offers interactive workshops that serve young people from grades 3 to 12 in schools across BC. Available at low cost, the program is particularly affordable for inner-city schools; there is no fee for students. To enhance the workshop experience, students can access free, on-line podcasts and in-depth study guides.

All programs allow students to experience Shakespeare as theatre, not just literature. In this way, Bard on the Beach hopes to change the way Shakespeare is taught in schools.

Mary Hartman, Bard’s Education Director, reports that demand for Bard in the Classroom continues to be strong with close to 200 sessions already booked since November. “Teachers appreciate curriculum enrichment programs like Bard in the Classroom,” she notes. “When students explore Shakespeare in engaging ways, they learn about language and articulating their own thoughts and feelings. These tools have an impact on both learning and critical thinking.”
