Ballet British Columbia makes Emily Molnar permanent artistic director
Ballet B.C. has announced it’s just signed a contract to make Emily Molnar its long-term artistic director.
Molnar stepped into the position temporarily in July 2009, following the departure of John Alleyne and on the heels of a financial crisis at the company.
Executive director Jay Rankin said her permanent hiring is one of the first steps to a new stability as the company embarks in a new direction—one he says is unique to North America.
“The critical difference between the 16 years under John Alleyne and now is that this company is not a vehicle for her [Molnar’s] work, necessarily,” Rankin said of Molnar, a one-time star performer with the company under Alleyne, a dancer with the Frankfurt Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada, and a choreographer across North America and Europe. “She’s going to dive into her extensive Rolodex of contacts with artists she knows,” Rankin said.
