B.C. puts $60 million back into sports and arts programs
A year after the provincial government cut deeply into youth sports and arts programs just as the 2010 Winter Olympics was on its doorstep, it is now pledging to put some of the money back.
But just who will benefit from the $60 million that will be injected into a new “2010 Sports and Arts Legacy” is unclear even for government officials.
In Tuesday’s budget Finance Minister Colin Hansen said the province will spend $30 million over three years for youth sport programs, and another $30 million for the arts. He said the money would be destined for “a renewed emphasis” on sports and the arts, whose funding had been cut last year because of the economic downturn.
But also he said the ministries responsible haven’t yet identified how the money, will be allocated.
