B.C. author Maggie De Vries among finalists for CBC Literary Awards

B.C. author Maggie De Vries, who wrote the 2003 memoir “Missing Sarah” about her sister’s disappearance from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, is one of 80 finalists from across Canada in the CBC Literary Awards.

De Vries is nominated in the creative non-fiction section for “Are We Listening?” The other categories are poetry and short stories, and there were more than 6,000 entries this year for all three.

The winners will be announced March 18.

The awards are presented in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts, which provides $60,000, and enRoute magazine, which publishes the winners.

First-prize winners receive $6,000 and second-prize winners $4,000.

The awards have given a boost to the careers of well-known writers such as Michael Ondaatje and Carol Shields.
