Arts groups, parents protest funding cuts
Arts supporters and parents with autistic children rallied at the B.C. legislature Wednesday to demand politicians restore millions in funding cuts.
“What has taken years to establish is being profoundly threatened with the stroke of a pen,” Michael Shamata, artistic director of the Belfry Theatre, told the standing committee on finance and governance services. Shamata spoke on behalf of ProArt Alliance, which represents Victoria’s professional arts organizations. Arts groups throughout the province were hit as part of a more than $60-million cut to gaming grants this year, which also affected hundreds of culture, sport, environment and parent advisory groups across B.C.
