Arts groups face another tough year: Government focuses shrinking funds on programs for youth

Community and professional arts groups face a shrinking pool of funds under the provincial budget tabled last week.

While arts groups that employ or program for youth and disabled people have been spared in the latest round of reallocations, reductions, legacy funds and contingency accounts that characterize the government’s approach to arts funding, those that serve adults are scrambling, no longer eligible to even apply for gambling revenue grants.

Funding from the B.C. Arts Council and gambling revenue that goes to artists and arts groups has dropped $2.6 million in the 2010-11 budget.

The government has announced a new $60-million Olympic legacy fund that will supply $10 million a year to arts and culture groups for the next three years, but even that amount doesn’t replace the funds stripped from the budget for arts.
